Table Credit Card Payments – Convenience Or Hassle

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

Some restaurants are moving into new technology by adding table based credit card readers to the table. This machine gives customers the ability to pay for their own meal at the table and reduces the need for waiters and waitresses to take the card away and scan it for payment. It is also being tested in hopes that the rates of credit card theft among the same wait staff will be reduced. This is one of the positive steps to help credit card holders reduce the amount of theft they are exposed to.

Restaurant owners were a little skeptical about this new idea at first because they saw it as a way to push their patrons into finishing their meals faster. Some of the restaurants, the fast food variety, allow customers to pay at the register when they order, and did not feel the need to add them at the tables. This technology is better equipped to serve restaurants which are designated as sit down meal restaurants.

The popularity of these readers among the wait staff is not too high. They feel that these readers will not allow them to receive tips and will not be a positive thing to have around when they are trying to get the customers to purchase more food items. The patrons will be focused on the amount of the bill instead of the more impulsive eating choices they have made in the past. It might actually cut down on the want to overeat because of the lack of funding to do so.

Europe has been the leader in this type of technology and the culture here is more accepting of this than in America. The real question to ask the patron is whether or not they are alright with handing their card over to a perfect stranger and watching them walk out of sight with it or would you prefer to keep it in hand and pay for the meal yourself? It might be worth thinking about and putting in your input to local restaurants to get this technology for your favorite eateries.

It only takes a second for you to slide you card in the machine and a receipt is printed for the wait staff to bring to you to sign. You then leave a tip as normal. The difference is that the wait staff never sees or touches your card at all during the process. You can swipe, sign, an leave, in the time it usually took to get the waitress or waiters attention to hand them the card. It not only brings convenience but also privacy to the way you pay for your meal. It will also reduce the workload on lower payed employees.

Each of the card scanners used at the table run about $100 and up for each unit. Restaurants are finding out the positive benefits of this payment option because the tables are being emptied faster to make way for new paying customers. The restaurant not only makes more money from this, the tips are also increasing as a result.

Credit Card Skimming Is Big Right Now

The term credit card skimming might be a new thing for you but it is happening all around you. It is something you need to be knowledgeable about so you can try to prevent this thing from happening to you. It is not only a problem facing the United States but has been seen in other international countries such as Asia, Latin America, and Europe. This illegal practice has seen losses in excess of a billion dollars annually form the multitudes of credit card holders.

The credit card skimming scan is am easy one to apply. It occurs when you, the credit card holder, allow a store employee to swipe your card for a purchase. The card is not only swiped across the machine to pay for the purchase but is also swipes through a machine they hold in the palm of their hand. This swiping machine they use is very small but big enough to store all your important information from the card. The information is sent into their system for safe keeping until they are ready to use it. There can be literally hundreds of card numbers in this machine at one time. Counterfeit cards can then be produced with your information and looks like they are the legitimate owners of the card in question.

Skimmers can be found all over the world. Once your information is stored in the skimmer and saved into their computer system, it can be sent anywhere in the world via the Internet. Ten years ago, this illegal practice was not so easy to get by with as it is today. The skimmers were constructed in such a large fashion, they could not be held but had to be put under a counter. Micro technology has produced smaller skimmers that can be purchased for about $300 from Internet sites. The machine that needs to produce the new cards runs in the thousands.

If an individual chooses, they can also take the credit card information right from the terminal at the store. A device called a skimmer bug is put into the swiping terminal and is used to retrieve the information at a later date. New credit card terminals are immune to this illegal practice and only the older ones seem to be used.

Once the illegal numbers are retrieved using any of the methods above, the thief can use the information to go shopping all over the world for anything they like. They particularly like the Internet and purchases made online. This is one of the reasons credit card fraud is increasing on the Internet. Thieves will start out by purchasing items that do not have a large selling price to make sure the care is active and ready to be used. Since the Internet has real time processing, a person is not able to verify the holder of the card to catch them in the middle of this fraudulent purchase. It is almost impossible to catch the person who is doing it and the real owners of the credit cards do not even know it is happening until it is too late to do anything about it.

Pay Credit Cards Weekly To Help Reduce Your Debt Faster

Credit cards are definitely convenient and help you to purchase what you want right now. The mounting problem of credit card debt is becoming the downfall of many. This problem is growing as a result of the uneducated individuals who are not able to take care of their credit properly and also in the decline of the economy and lack of jobs available.

If a credit card is not used in a wise manner, it can lead to overspending and unnecessary spending habits. When the spending gets out of hand, the debt it causes can lead to bad credit reports and the need to file bankruptcy. For those who have more than one credit card, the debt can escalate until the balance is too much to pay every month.

Before this happens, individuals need to take control of their finances and use their credit cards for only those purchases that are necessary. Take a look at the item you want to purchase. Do you want this item or do you really need it. Buying something you want for yourself as a treat every now and then is acceptable but it is never wise to keep this practice as a regular habit.

Consider consolidating your multiple credit cards into one low interest card and get rid of the others once they are paid off. Make sure the one you choose to keep has a low minimum balance each month. The limit needs to stay close to an amount you can pay within two months time and no more. When you only find yourself with one payment, you can then raise the monthly payment on this one card and keep it paid up faster than if you had multiple payments.

No individual likes to feel the stress in trying to pay off several cards at once especially if they are completely maxed out. It makes you feel like you are working for nothing. This untamed spending is way out of control and needs to be tamed. Try to only use the credit card for emergency reasons. Stay within your budget so bankruptcy will not be a factor for you.

A good habit to begin is to pay your credit cards on a weekly schedule instead of monthly. The debt will be lowered much quicker this way. If you take the time now to pay each week, it will ultimately give you a better future without all the added extra stress of credit card debt. Your credit rating will be much better off also and allow you to have a good future.

Any time you are paying your credit card debt down, you need to pay the higher interest rate cards first. This provides you with more money for the lower rate cards. It also allows you to have fewer payment amounts each month giving you more money to put in savings and to invest in positively for your future and the future of your family.
